Kensaw Mountain Landis was born on November 20, 1866 in the town of Millville, Ohio. He died on November 25, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois at the age of 77 , after almost a quarter of a century as commissioner of baseball and a judge for 17 years. He had helped restore the games integrity after the Black Sox scandal of 1919. In 1943 the Pittsburgh Pirates sought out permission to hire Josh Gibson, but Landis refused saying "The colored ball players have their own league. Let them stay in it."
